In 1950 Robert and Betty Barbely bought Barbely's Store from
Russell Bradford(Bettys father). Robert was 25 years old with
three children. We payed $2000.00 for the business which was
borrowed from my grandfather(Harry Parker). Robert payed it
back in six months. The store was like most country stores at the
time. Customers brought in eggs and chickens to exchange for
groceries. We sold hardware,clothing,meats,cheese,and
groceries. He also sold fertilizer through Tilghmans. Mason's
tomato factory kept us busy in the summer. We had a lunch
counter. We served cheese burgers, soup, coffee, etc. The men
and women ate together at a long counter. The store was the first
deer checking station in Worcestor County. I call the store the
911 of Newark. If anyone had a problem they called 0292 for
help. I was thankful that our 6 children, 3boys and 3 girls always
has a place to work and be with their dad. Robert retired in 1988
after running the store for 35 years. In 2006 my son in law and
daughter, Donnie and Janice Shockley, started turning the store
into a store and restaurant. With a lot of permits and planning.
Donnie and Janice opened the store June 15,2007. Customers
have advertised for them. When the food is delicious they will
come.
